TLS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, Cleveland Indians letterhead, July 18, 1949. Greenberg recounts, at length, the difficulties in dealing with Milan Kubene, a player in the Indian’s minor league system. Kubene had been promoted to Class A ball, but did not report due to a reported ankle injury. After the injury, Greenberg states that “player Kubene departed from spring training camp ‘without my permission’ and without my knowledge.” After a doctor’s examination of his ankle, Kubene was optioned to the Gasden Baseball Club, but refused to report. Several days later he reappeared at Greenberg’s office, refusing the demotion, but later agreeing to report to the team. Greenberg reports that Kubene “played in one ball game, remarked that he did not like the town or the ball park and without notifying anyone had left town.” Greenberg concludes his letter: Being fully aware of the conditions that players have to contend with in their rise to the Major Leagues, I have been very sympathetic in handling all cases, but when a player twice in a season ‘jumps’ his ball club, then I no longer feel that I am obligated to show him any consideration.” Accompanied by an unsigned report from the doctor who examined Kubene’s ankle. In fine condition, with some mild wrinkles, and a staple to top left. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
