Unsigned ALS, in pencil, one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, August 18, 1961. Given the mysteriousness surrounding the life of Moe Berg (1902-1972), we read the offered note with … well, great interest. In this letter to Professor von Karman, the Major League star/spy actually alludes to his days of international espionage, and even references by name the head of the Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to the CIA), Major General William Joseph Donovan. In part, Berg writes: “Many thanks for your very kind letter of 24 June. I’m only sorry that I wasn’t technical enough to qualify in the categories you had in mind when we spoke in New York … I took the liberty of giving your name … only in case of an emergency to my older brother Samuel Berg, M.D … It’s an odd conincidence that my brother—officer in the medical corps in the Pacific—was tabbed from the Philippines to do some blood work … victim unknown to me (& incidentally the first fall out study) while I was galavanting in Europe for you, General Donovan.” Intersecting folds and some scattered, yet light, soiling and wrinkling are present, but the fascinating heirloom exhibits fine condition.
