Lord Jeffrey Amherst

Commander-in-chief of the British army during the Revolutionary War (1717-1797) whose reputation was damaged due to allegations that he conducted an early form of germ warfare against Native Americans, a group he held in extremely low regard, using the deadly smallpox virus. ALS signed “Amherst,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 8.5, March 19, 1796. Amherst writes to Mr. Windham. In part: “[I have received] a copy of the attestations of three sergeants of the flank companys of the 4th Battn. of His Majesty’s 60th Regiment, that no clothing was issued to the said companys for the year 1793 & 1794. I have not received any answer to what I wrote to the commanding officers of the battalions in the W. Indies on the said subject. I will immediately write that ample Justice may be done….” In very good condition, with light toning, staining, wrinkling, and show-through of ink. The writing is dark and clear throughout.
