Signed book: The Democratic Book: 1936. Gilt-stamped leather (including “William W. Howes,” the original owner), 11.5 x 14.5, 384 pages. Limited edition (limitation unspecified; this copy No. 2182), signed by Roosevelt on the limitation page beneath a color vignette of the White House. A lavishly produced promotional “year book” for the Democratic Party, with features on accomplishments by Democrats, images of FDR’s cabinet, and ads. The selling of advertising space—and the selling of the book itself to corporations, at $250.00 per copy—aroused much controversy at the time, and objections were raised that these de facto corporate contributions violated the Corrupt Practices Act. Howes is listed on page 347 as the Democratic National Committeeman for South Dakota. In very good to fine condition overall, with rubbing and wear to extremities (loss to tail of spine), cracking to hinges, light toning and soiling to endpapers, and a few ink marks to interior. The signed page is clean and unaffected by any faults. JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
