Description

“A League of Nations, like socialism, is a lovely theory” says American novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs

The political insights of one of America’s greatest novelists are on display in this letter signed by the immortal Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950). Penned entirely in Burrough’s hand, the message reveals the writer’s impressions with respect to the forming of a League of Nations. Dated June 5, 1923 and addressed to one D. P. Rick, the note reads, “A League of Nations would become a mere scrap of paper when it ceases to serve the purposes of a powerful member. Like socialism, it is a lovely theory.” A full-name, “Edgar Rice Burroughs” signature closes the thoughtful comment, and every bit of the writer’s black ink writing remains vibrant against his personal letterhead (6 x 3.5). Modest paper loss at the edges and standard compacting folds in no way detract from the item’s otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
