As the American Civil War raged across the country, President Abraham Lincoln affixed his name to this military commission (15.75 x 19.25) appointing James H. Carleton Brigadier General of Volunteers. A capable Union presence on the southwestern front, in this capacity Carleton faced more danger at the hands of the prairie Indians than from any Confederate threat. Still, he served as an important cog in the Union machine, remaining a guardian of the western frontier. The 16th President of the United States meticulously executed his full-name, “Abraham Lincoln” signature just below the partly printed text. His Secretary of War countersigned the vellum document, adding “Edwin M. Stanton” beside the President’s flowing signature. This covenant between appointee and Commander in Chief exhibits fine display properties (intersecting folds; areas of soiling are confined to the periphery), and its embossed, blue paper seal remains intact. Lincoln’s signature is bold, dark, and perfectly penned. An uncommonly notable military association! JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
