Offered is a mid-1800s carte-de-visite photo picturing Union General Joseph Hooker. The Civil War luminary poses for the photographer’s lens to allow this beautiful and compelling view of the subject’s in-uniform arrangement. “Fighting Joe”’s bold, black fountain pen signature was penned along the lower portion of the mount to read, “Joseph Hooker Maj. Genl.” The crisp and highly visual example bears a small abrasion near its right edge, yet fine overall condition prevails. Among the most decorated of his war-time contemporaries, Hooker is perhaps best known for his defeat at the hands of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorville in 1863.
