Description

Stan Laurel

ALS, one page both sides, 6 x 3.5, personal letterhead, November 27, 1956. Laurel writes to his friend Elmer. In part: “Thanks Elmer for the newspaper regarding the Dupont Mill explosion—you were certainly lucky to be out of range—don’t think I’d care to live that close to a powder mill—it would make me a nervous wreck! We have been having several brush fires in the mountains here—one still raging (11 fireman burned to death) many thousands of acres destroyed this last month. They have been bringing in a lot of Indian fire fighters…& planes are flying over the fire spraying chemicals to put it out—it’s really serious.” Laurel is most likely referring to the November 1956 Inaja fire, which killed 11 firefighters near Julien, California. In very fine condition. Handwritten Laurel letters in cursive are fairly uncommon. RRAuction COA.
