Partly printed DS as President, one page, 12.5 x 14.75, April 26, 1799. A grant for a parcel of land under the provisions of “An Act to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment to obtain titles to certain lands lying north-west of the River Ohio, between the little Miami and Sciota,” issued to Robert Tompkins, “an Ensign for three years.” The 1921 biography The Life of James Monroe by George Morgan documents Tompkins’s participation in an unauthorized attack party during the Revolutionary War, for which General Adam Stephen was reportedly rebuked by Washington, “You, sir, may have ruined all my plans, by having put [the enemy] on their guard.” Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. The document retains its embossed paper seal at lower left. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds (vertical fold to first name; small holes and separations elsewhere, one with tissue repair), and scattered toning, soiling, and wrinkling. An appealing example with an interesting association and a large, distinct signature! JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
