Description

“Unconquered Erin shall be thine!”: Stirring AQS from Irish patriot DANIEL O’CONNELL

Irish political leader (1775–1847) best known for his tireless efforts on behalf of Catholic Emancipation (i.e., the right for Catholics to sit in Parliament) and the Repeal of the Union between Ireland and Great Britain. Scarce and outstanding AQS on a pale green 7 x 4 sheet, boldly signed “Daniel O’Connell, 23d July 1835.” O’Connell writes out the text of his quatrain “The Emerald Isle.” In full: “Still shalt thou be my waking theme;/Thy glories still my midnight dream./And every though, and wish of mine;/Unconquered Erin shall be thine!” Two light vertical folds (one through last name), tape remnants at corners, an very subtle stain (touching signature and part of text but not affecting legibility in the least), otherwise fine condition. An exceptional memento of this central figure in Irish history! RRAuction COA.
