Description

“Desirous of getting a transcript of the number of prisoners taken by the Fifth Corps at Five Forks”

American military officer (1830–1882) who, despite earning the sobriquet “Hero of Little Round Top” for his actions at Gettysburg, was humiliated when General Philip Sheridan removed him from command after Warren’s supposedly ineffective performance at Five Forks. ALS signed “G. K. Warren,” one lightly lined page, 5.5 x 8.25, April 30, 1880. Warren writes to General M. R. Patrick. In part: “Can you inform me what became of the records of your department as Provost Marshall [sic] of the Army of the Potomac, at the close of the war. I am very desirous of getting a transcript of the number of prisoners taken by the Fifth Corps at Five Forks with the names of the regiments, brigades & to which they belonged. Please answer soon….” Light intersecting folds, mild wrinkling, and faint staining at corners from glue traces to reverse, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
