Vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo of Truman at water’s edge with a pair of binoculars, signed and inscribed in ink, “To Sgt. Cecil Stoughton, with best wishes, Harry S. Truman.” Stoughton (1920–2008), a retired officer from the Army Signal Corps, became the first official White House photographer at the beginning of the Kennedy administration. Though he produced scores of memorable images, he is likely best remembered for his famous photo of the swearing-in of LBJ following the assassination of JFK as a tearful Jackie Kennedy looks on. The reverse of the photo bears Stoughton’s ink stamp. In fine condition, with a few small creases (one to first word of inscription) and faint impressions (including a paperclip mark), and a hint of rippling to top edge. A most notable association!
