Partly printed DS, signed twice on the reverse (as “John Adams” and “Adams”), one page, 8 x 6.25, May 4, 1768. A document issued on behalf of George III to the Sheriff of Plymouth County to “attach the Goods or Estate of Job Brewster of Duxborough in the said County of Plymouth Mariner.” Above his full signature on the reverse, Adams has added the endorsement “Mr. Officer: Attach sufficient or hold to bail by order of the creditor.” Both the front and reverse are endorsed by patriot J[ames] Otis, to whom is attributed the well-known phrase “Taxation with representation is tyranny.” In very good condition, with toning, separations, and small holes along vertical folds (small piece of tape to front), a few chips, and scattered soiling and staining (lightly touching larger “Adams” signature). The tiny wafer seal is intact. JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
