Legendary director (1885–1957) whose autocratic nature and profligacy brought an end to his directorial career. He went on to enjoy success as a character actor, perhaps most memorably as Gloria Swanson’s faithful butler in the 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard. AQS in red ink on an off-white, slightly irregular sheet trimmed in size to approximately 5 x 7, signed and inscribed “To Harry Carr with fond memories of Apple blossom-nights and daze, Erich v. Stroheim, Brentwood Heights, Feby. 24th, 1935.” Stroheim quotes from a Gypsy song. In part: “Worldly goods which you possess—own you and destroy you. Love must be like the blowing wind, fresh and invigorating….” Matted with a photo to an overall size of 20 x 16.
