British naval officer and explorer (1868–1912) best known for the two expeditions he led to the Antarctic in 1901–1904 and 1910–1913. During the second of these, the Terra Nova Expedition, extreme weather, poor health, and a shortage of supplies led to the death of Scott and his party. Pencil signature, “R. Scott,” on the reverse of a 5.25 x 3.25 postcard featuring a photo of the ship Terra Nova. To the left of the signature is a handwritten ink caption explaining the item’s origin: “This card was signed by Captain Scott and given to Eric Atkinson on board the Terra Nova the defore she sailed from London on June 1st, 1910.” Light scattered soiling and a few small creases, otherwise fine condition.
