Unsigned manuscript portion in Thackeray’s hand on an off-white, slightly irregular 6 x 4 slip, circa early 1860s. An extract from Thackeray’s Roundabout Papers, an essay collection gathered from his contributions to Cornhill Magazine, comprising approximately 15 lines (more than 200 words) with corrections and emendations. In part: “The last essay of this Roundabout Series, describing the griefs and miseries of the Editorial chair, was written, as the kind reader will acknowledge, in a mild and gentle, not in a warlike or satirical spirit. I showed how cudgels were applied; but, surely, the meek object of persecution hit no blows in return.
