Description

Flown mission emblem signed by Mitchell

Color Apollo 14 patch screen-printed on a 9 x 9 piece of beta cloth, signed in black felt tip “Flown to the moon aboard ‘Kittyhawk,’ January 31–February 9, 1971, Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 LMP.” Accompanied by a pictorial certificate of authenticity signed by Mitchell, stating in part that “The accompanying Apollo 14 mission emblem, which bears my handwritten flight certification … was carried by me to lunar orbit, aboard our Command Module Kittyhawk on the Apollo 14 mission January 31–February 9, 1971…. It is identical to the patches sewn on the crew’s suits. This patch was vacuum packed and stowed aboard Kittyhawk…. It then remained in my personal space collection since its return to me, by NASA, in 1971….” According to the consignor, the balance of Mitchell’s flown Apollo 14 betas were donated to a public institution in 2008.
