Description

“A lot of us in Baseball are taking up a fight for the continuance of commissioner Chandler in office”

Baseball pitcher from 1891 to 1914, manager from 1901 to 1920, and team owner from 1920 to 1955. Griffith (1869–1955), known as the “Old Fox,” was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1946. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Washington American League Base Ball Club letterhead, December 16, 1950. Griffith writes to Loretta Falsey in New Haven, Connecticut. In full: “I have your telegram and was pleased to receive same stating that your organization felt like the Amvets concerning the action taken in reference to Commissioner Chandler. For your information, I want you to know that a lot of us in Baseball are taking up a fight for the continuance of commissioner Chandler in office….” The events Griffith mentions relate to Chandler’s then-recent failure to be selected for another term as Baseball Commissioner. Chandler’s controversial but steadfast insistence on integration of the major leagues met with much resistance by a number of team owners, who replaced him with Ford Frick (who served until 1965). Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine, clean condition. JSA/Mike Gutierrez Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
