Description

“I can come to Greeley ... and talk to you about the novel”: WOLFE accepts a speaking engagement in the year of Of Time and the River

Highly regarded American writer (1900–1938) whose four novels, including Look Homeward, Angel and Of Time and the River, take a place among the high points of 20th-century fiction. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, July 8, 1935. Wolfe writes to E. A. Cross at Colorado State Teacher’s College. In part: “I …. have just finished going through a great stack of mail which has accumulated here during the four months I have been away. That explains the delay in answering your letter … in which you ask me If I can come to Greeley July 30 and talk to you about the novel. If you have not changed your plans because of my delay in answering your letter, I should be delighted to come to Greeley. Mr. Davison, in one of his letters to me, suggested that I could do so without interfering with any of the arrangements at Boulder, and if this is true and you still want me, I shall be delighted to come. I shall be in New York another week or ten days answering these letters which have accumulated, and I shall be very grateful to you if you will write me here at Scribner’s as soon as you can and let me know if you still want me….” The novel to which Wolfe alludes was evidently Of Time and the River, published in the same year. In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to first letter), a few light wrinkles and creases, pinholes, paperclip rust stain to bottom margin, and mild soiling. JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
