Description

Appointing a soldier later captured at Chickamauga

War-dated partly printed DS as president, one page, 14 x 18, May 18, 1863. President Lincoln appoints Roman H. Gray to the rank of “Second Lieutenant in the Fifteenth Regiment of Infantry.” Signed at the conclusion by Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Matted and framed with a seated portrait of Lincoln, to an overall size of 27.5 x 25.5. Research indicates Gray was later captured at the Battle of Chickamauga and sent to Libby Prison. In very good condition, with Lincoln’s signature and handwritten portions of text light, but legible, previous storage folds, and some scattered light soiling. JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA. Oversized.
