Description

Declining to attend the dedication of a memorial at Gettysburg

Two items: 1) ALS signed “Grover Cleveland,” one lightly lined page, 5.75 x 9, Victoria Hotel letterhead, August 16, 1889. Cleveland writes to Lieut. Col. John P. Nicholson in Philadelphia. In full: “I acknowledge with thanks an invitation to attend the dedication of the monuments marking the positions occupied by the Pennsylvania Commands engaged in the Battle of Gettysburg. I am sorry that engagements already made will prevent my being present on the interesting occasion….” 2) ALS signed “Frances F. Cleveland,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 6, Executive Mansion letterhead, no date. Cleveland writes to “Mr. Secretary” (possibly the same recipient as that for the letter above). In part: “I have shown your note to the President and he says he has seen General Tracey this morning and as we have Miss Hamlin with us from Holland Patent, he thinks perhaps we had better not go. I am sorry, as I should enjoy it very much….” The first letter is fine, with a touch of mild soiling and handling wear; the second is very good, with scattered toning and soiling. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
