Description

Leigh pours her “almighty miserable” heart out to her lover and caretaker Jack Merivale

ALS signed “Angelica,” three pages, 8.5 x 11.25, Hotel Dorset letterhead, no date. Letter to her lover Jack Merivale, whom she lived with from 1958 until her death in 1967. Merivale become her dedicated caretaker in her final years as her manic depression and prolonged illnesses grew more severe. In part: “I couldn’t go to sleep without writing you a little letter to tell you I love you—I have been so negligent about writing partly because I am so very exhausted & partly because as you know I have been so almighty miserable. The run through today seemed dreadful again—so you see it is already a very up & down affair…I live for news of Wednesday’s interview. Then after the picture could you come for all of the time?…If you had the faintest idea how much I miss you. Your darling letter was so sweet & comforting & tender. Goodnight my dear sweet love. I hold you in my arms & smother—absolutely smother you with kisses.” Leigh signs the letter as “Angelica,” as Merivale frequently referred to her as “his angel,” as documented in John Russell’s book entitled “Vivien Leigh.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Leigh’s hand. In fine condition. PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
