Description

“President Nixon should have been forced to stand trial before a jury”

American lawyer (1912–2004) who served as the first special prosecutor for the Watergate scandal until he was fired by Nixon’s order. Refusing to carry out the order, Attorney General Elliot Richardson and his deputy, William Ruckelshaus resigned, leaving the deed to be carried out by Solicitor General Robert Bork. Souvenir typescript on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of glossy photo paper, signed in felt tip at the conclusion. An excerpt from Cox’s statements on the Watergate affair. In part: “No one could take joy in finding the president of the United States guilty of misdeed charged, whether you agree with his policies or not but even the highest officials—even the president—must be subject to the rule of law…. I was critical of President Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon at the time and publicly stated that in my opinion former President Nixon should have been forced to stand trial before a jury like anyone else indicted by a grand jury. Today, I am more doubtful.” A few dings, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
