The last czar of Russia (born 1868) who reigned from 1894 until his abdication in 1917. In the wake of the Russian Revolution, Nicholas, Empress Alexandra, and their children were imprisoned and finally executed on July 17, 1918. Though the ultimate fate of the Romanovs—and the putative survival of Princess Anastasia in particular—became the stuff of legend, recent research has confirmed that the executions were indeed carried out, and that the remains were soaked in acid and burned. Scarce 7.25 x 10.75 Boissonnas et Eggler photo of Nicholas in uniform, signed in the lower border in black ink and dated 1909. In fine condition, with a few light surface marks to background at top, slight trimming to bottom edge, and a hint of slight silvering along left edge. The signature is crisp and bold. Nicholas is elusive in signed images, with only a handful of examples having surfaced at auction in the past decade. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
