‘MOST ... NOBLE , HONOURABLE, VENERABLE ... EMPERORS, KINGS, REPUBLICS”: WASHINGTON signs papers for a ship bound for the West Indies

Partly printed DS as president, signed “Go: Washington,” one page slightly trimmed in size to 12.5 x 15.25, September 5, 1794. A three-language ship’s papers issued to John Wallace, “master or commander of the schooner called the William ... lying at present in the port of Alexandria bound for the West Indies and laden with Flour, Bread, Corn & Shingles....” Countersigned by Edm[und] Randolph as secretary of state, Robert Mease as mayor (of Alexandria), and Vincent Gray as deputy collector of customs. The embossed paper seal remains intact at center left. In good to very good condition, with trimming as noted (near but not touching printed text at left edge), allover toning, intersecting folds (horizontal fold through signature; scattered tiny holes and partial separations, the latter touching “G” and “ngton,” archivally reinforced from reverse); and a few chips and stains.
