Franking signature, “Free, James Buchanan,” on a 4.75 x 2.5 mailing envelope addressed by Buchanan’s niece, Harriet Lane, to Madame Beighmans [&?] Charles Macalester, Esq., in Philadelphia, and bearing a partly illegible Lancaster postmark and “FREE” ink stamp. In very good condition, with stamps just touching first letter of signature, scattered light soiling, staining, and pencil mark (the latter two lightly touching first name), and a few small tears and chips.
