Signing a 1776 pay order

Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. Manuscript DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 7.25 x 6.5, November 20, 1776. A pay order issued on behalf James Lockwood for £23.14.8 “for his Wages as Secretary to General Woster [sic].” Countersigned by T[homas] Seymour. Faint show-through from dockets to reverse and scattered stray ink marks, otherwise fine, bright condition. R&R COA.
