Franking signature as president, “Free, James Buchanan,” on a 5.5 x 3 mailing envelope addressed in another hand to Miss Macalester [&] Charles Macalester in Philadelphia and bearing an 1858 or ’59 “Washington City/FREE” postmark. In very good condition, with light scattered soiling and staining, postmark to first two letters of signature, and small tears and chips to top edge near but not touching signature.
