“OFF FOR A BIT OF REST”: An ailing FDR gratefully accepts a gift of vitamin pills from his cousin

TLS signed “FDR,” one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, April 7, 1944. FDR writes to his cousin, Laura Delano, whom he addresses as “Polly.” in full: “Thank you for your note and for sending me the two bottles of Unicap vitamin pills. I used to take these and they are very good. However, I am not taking any at present, but may resume so I am glad to have them. I do hope you are continuing on your diet and feeling better. Do take care of yourself. I am off for a bit of rest, although my bronchitis is fairly well cleared up by now….” According to the 2002 biography The Hidden Campaign: FDR’s Health and the 1944 Election by Hugh E. Evans, M.D., on the same day FDR wrote this letter, a board of physicians overseeing his health recommended a restricted daily schedule and exercise. Though FDR was at the time suffering from severe hypertension and congestive heart failure, his physicians were reluctant to put him in the hospital because of his presidential duties at a crucial point in World War II. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
