Description

DINNER WITH DISNEY: The animation pioneer signs with GABLE, FLYNN and others

Menu from the Presidential Dining Room of the Mayflower Hotel, Washington, 9 x 12, May 13, 1942, signed on the cover in fountain pen by Walt Disney, Dottie Lamour, Clark Gable, Melvyn Douglas, Jeanette MacDonald, and Errol Flynn. According the consignor, the item was obtained directly from the former maitre d’ of the hotel in 1948. Disney’s presence in Washington at that time may well have been related to the production of animated propaganda films to aid the war effort, which constituted a large part of the studio’s output for the next several years. Among the other films in production at Disney Studios in 1942 was the now-classic Third Reich satire “Der Fuehrer’s Face,” starring Donald Duck. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, rubbing, and handling wear, slightly indistinct contrast to first letter of Disney’s signature against background, and a few slits to back panel. PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
