Description

DAY LATE, DOLLAR SHORT? ELLSWORTH signs a pay order on July 5, 1776

Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8 x 6.5, July 5, 1776. A pay order on behalf of Capt. Jabez Botsford “as Paymaster of his own company now raising for the Continental Service in Canada” in the amount of £852. Faint show-through from docket on reverse, otherwise very fine, bright condition. A date of exceptional historical interest—mere hours after Hancock put his name to the most pivotal document in American history! R&R COA.
