MAINE EVENT: GARFIELD evaluates his prospects less than two months before the 1880 election: “We can win the fight if my friends do their utmost”

LS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 8, Mentor, Ohio letterhead, September 14, 1880. Garfield writes to former Ohio congressman Lorenzo Danford. In full: “Yours of the 13th just received and read with pleasure. The news from Maine this morning is not hat we hoped it would be but I trust it will not discourage our friends or weaken their efforts. The fact is there is a larger vote in Maine than every before and each party has just about kept its relative standing last year. we can win the fight if our friends do their utmost….” Light scattered soiling, narrow marginal mounting strip to first page, and slight fading to last letter of signature, otherwise fine condition.
