Description

Distinguished American poet (1807–1882) who produced such timeless classics as “Paul Revere’s Ride,” “The Song of Hiawatha,” and “Evangeline.” Among other distinctions, Longfellow was the first American honored with a sculpted likeness in the Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey. Bank check, 7.75 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Longfellow, payable to A. L. Pierce or order for $100.00, October 2, 1878. Longfellow has also initialed and dated the adhesive revenue stamp at left. Matted with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 25 x 18.75. Bank stamps and punch cancellations (the former touching signature; the latter near but not touching) and faint intersecting folds, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA. Oversized.
