Description

NEW ARRIVAL: “I am very glad I have a nice girl”

Maine-born Union major general (1828–1914) who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his defense of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. He later served as Governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College. ALS signed “Joshua,” one lightly lined page both sides, 5 x 8, May 3, 1874. Chamberlain writes to his mother. In part: “You will learn before this can reach you of Mary’s confinement. A telegraph from Lewis said she was confined yesterday morning: a fine healthy girl and that both are doing well. I have no particulars…. This is very good news…. Will all your daughters have boys? Than it is all right: and I am very glad I have a nice girl. Mary can name it whatever name she pleases….” In very good condition, with scattered staining (touching a few words of text) and horizontal mailing fold lightly touching signature. R&R COA.
