Description

Original illustrations for Thackeray

Artist (1838–1914) best known for his illustrations for the works of Dickens, Thackeray, and others. Set of 15 original illustrations, probably intended for the edition of the Complete Works of William Makepeace Thackeray published by the Colonial Press (Boston/New York, circa 1900), each pencil on thin paper and measuring approximately 3.5 x 5.25, affixed at the edges to early card mounts, each signed in pencil “F. W. Pailthorpe.” Among the characters and scenes portrayed are Little Poisinet, Old Tom, Barry Lyndon, Mr. Shum, Colonel Newcome, and more. Several of the signatures are in mirror image, evidently reflecting the artist’s uncertainty with the method of reproduction to be used (some of which would have “flipped” the images and signatures). Accompanied by unsigned engravings of Thackeray and George Cruikshank (the latter apparently by Pailthorpe). Housed in a custom library slipcase. Provenance: The Public Library of Brookline, Massachusetts (Frances Emily Hunt Memorial Fund, 1944). Mounting as noted, mat burn to mounts (not affecting images), and light uniform toning, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
