Description

Four-star general (1883–1946), aka “Vinegar Joe” and “Old Joe,” best known for his service in China. Relieved from command in 1944 as part of FDR’s geopolitical maneuvering in Asia, Stilwell was reassigned to command the American ground forces during the final battle for Okinawa in 1945. War-dated TLS, one page, 7 x 9.25, Headquarters, Army Ground Forces letterhead, March 2, 1945. Letter to a collector seeking a handwritten letter. In part, “I regret that my longhand penmanship is not all that it might be, and therefore I must send you a typewritten letter. The autograph you requested is enclosed.” In fine condition, with light show-through from a pencil notation on reverse. R&R COA.
