Description

ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, December 31, 1891. Cleveland writes to R. Glackens[?] In part: “We have received the chair which the St. Louis Furniture Board of Trade sent to our young daughter and beg to return our sincere thanks for the same. The intrinsic value of this handsome gift, is of course greatly enhanced by the historical interest which must always attach to the material of which it is constructed, and by the evidence it furnishes of the kindness and consideration of its donors. You may be sure that our child, when she learns the use of her chair, will also be taught every association connected with it, and the circumstances relating to its presentation….” Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth, was born on October 3, 1891, and died of diphtheria at the age of 12. In good condition, with horizontal fold with partial separations (tape stain to both sides; touching first few letters of first name), edge chip with repair (touching a few words), and scattered soiling and staining. The writing is dark throughout. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
