Description

“THE SCREEN DOOR SLAMS”: Early handwritten draft lyrics for SPRINGSTEEN’s classic “Thunder Road”

Unsigned lyrics in Springsteen’s hand for an early draft of the song “Thunder Road,” written in ballpoint on the first three lightly lined pages of a 3 x 5 spiral notebook, no date [circa 1975]. The lyrics, here bearing the title “Run Till Morning,” read, in part: “Sometimes I get tird [sic] of livin’ in the park/Callin’ NYC runnin’ in the dark…. I wanna take you out behind the wall where the heat-lighting [sic]…. The screen door slams… I feel just like dead winter/Today real cold real gray…. Ride the wave/Nothing left (at all)/(There) to save weary crystal….” The song, which went through several title changes (including “Wings for Wheels” and “Glory Road”) was one of the featured tracks on Springsteen’s iconic debut album Born to Run. It was later ranked Number 86 on Rolling Stone magazines list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” Expected mild handling wear, otherwise fine, clean condition. An historic relic from one of the greatest names in rock history! COA Roger Epperson/REAL and R&R COA.
