German field marshal (1891–1944) who earned the sobriquet “The Desert Fox” for his tactical genius as Commander of the Afrika Korps. In 1944 he was implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler; given the choice of suicide or a trial, he ended his own life with poison. Vintage matte-finish 4 x 5.75 German postcard photo of a smiling Rommel posing in desert uniform with a sand dune visible in the background, signed on the image in his usual indelible pencil “Rommel”; he has also signed the reverse in the same manner. A touch of subtle soiling and very slight silvering, somewhat indistinct contrast to signature on front against background, and a hint of mild rubbing to reverse, otherwise fine, clean condition. Seldom seen in this signed pose! R&R COA.
