Description

Roosevelt pines for Lady Astor: “I wish you could be simultaneously a member of the House of Representatives; we need you here”

ALS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland letterhead, no date. Roosevelt writes to Lady Astor, the controversial first woman member of the House of Commons, introducing his law partner Basil O’Connor. In full: “My partner, Basil O’Connor, & his very charming wife are going to be in London for a short visit—their first trip & I shall be very grateful if you will say Howdy to them & perhaps give them a card to the House of Commons. I wish you could be simultaneously a member of the House of Representatives; we need you here. My regards to your husband—I hope you will come over here again soon.” Lady Astor counted among her other acquaintances Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and George Bernard Shaw. In her final years, Astor made several more trips to the United States. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope addressed in Roosevelt’s hand. In fine, crisp condition. JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
