Description

On John Marshall: “A strong personality who asserted profound influence upon the course of the Court and the Nation”

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1908–1999) who served from 1970 to 1994. He is probably best remembered for writing the majority opinion in the landmark case Roe v. Wade. TLS, one page, 7 x 9.5, Supreme Court chambers letterhead, September 7, 1971. Blackmun writes to Larry Diefenbach. In part: “I … am interested in the fact that you have gathered material for an exhibit on the Supreme Court. I would have very little to offer as to a suggestion to this as the subject is a broad one and so much depends on one’s personal inclinations. You ask specifically that I name the greatest Chief Justice. This kind of thing, of course, is always a matter of opinion, and opinions differ. I suspect, however, that nearly everyone will agree that Chief Justice Marshall was a strong personality who asserted profound influence upon the course of the Court and the Nation. Those influences remain to this day.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 10.25 x 12.5. Mailing fold just touching descender of “y,” otherwise very fine, fresh condition. R&R COA.
