Exceptional American tennis player (1943–1993) who won three grand slam titles. Well known as a social activist, Ashe became a pioneering voice in the early fight against AIDS after he contracted the HIV virus from a series of blood transfusions. He died of AIDS-related complications at the age of 49. ALS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, no date [envelope postmarked September 3, 1975]. Ashe writes to Sylvia Lyons, wife of New York Post columnist Leonard Lyons, evidently responding to an inquiry about hypothetical plans. In full: “I would continue pretty much as now except I would not play as often. I would buy more art, get more involved in South Africa … but very little else would change.” Ashe bested Jimmy Connors to take his only Wimbledon months earlier, in July 1975. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Auction LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
