Description

Public Servants: 1870s D.C. autograph album with more then 380 signatures, including three presidents, Civil War generals, and the entire Waite Supreme Court

Remarkable autograph album containing more than 380 signatures by presidents, cabinet members, legislators, and Supreme Court justices, gilt-stamped leather, 7.5 x 9.25, circa 1877–79. The signatures were evidently obtained during the 45th congress, during the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes. The signed pages bear from one to three signatures; nearly all pages are single-sided. In addition to a large contingent of congressmen and senators, some of the more notable signatures include: President R. B. Hayes and future presidents J. A. Garfield and Wm. McKinley, Jr.; cabinet members Sherman, McCrary, Devens, Key, Schurz, and Thompson; all nine Supreme Court Justices, including Waite, Strong, Hunt, Clifford, Swayne, Miller, Field, Bradley, and Harlan; future Supreme Court Justices Matthews and Lamar; former Supreme Court Justice David Davis; former Vice President Hannibal Hamlin; former Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens; all four black members of the 45th Congress (J. H. Rainey, B. K. Bruce, Richard H. Cain, Robert Smalls); Civil War generals A. E. Burnside, N. P. Banks, Benj. F. Butler, and M. C. Butler; and others. The binding is lightly rubbed, with chipping to spine ends and front joint/hinge cracked but intact. The individual pages are generally fine to very fine, with an occasional hint of mild toning and occasional brushing. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
