Description

“The Life Force drives us to invent machinery for its purposes”: A year after Hiroshima, Shaw writes to an engineer on “prospects of colossal nuclear power”

Nobel Prize–winning Irish dramatist and critic (1856–1950) who takes a place among the most distinguished and influential literary figures of his time. Excellent ALS signed “G. Bernard Shaw,” on his 5.25 x 3.25 personal postcard, December 4, 1946. Shaw writes to William O. Schrader in Caracas, Venezuela. In full: “Well, we are for all practical purposes agreed. You go ahead as an engineer with prospects of colossal nuclear power in prospect. The Life Force drives us to invent machinery for its purposes; that does not make life fundamentally mechanical any more than my job makes it fundamentally literary. The drive for more knowledge and power remains vital and inexplicable; so why bother about party labels?” Mild soiling and handling wear and a few very faint creases, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
