Description

Pulling strings for a relative: “I will gladly write .. so that this case is not treated in the normal routine way”

TLS in German, signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 11, blind-embossed personal letterhead, December 3, 1940. Einstein writes to an unspecified cousin. In part (translated): “I am very happy about the good news and enclose a general letter of recommendation…. I advise you however to visit Mr. Erich Marx (engineer from Karlsruhe)…. He is also in a rather modest situation, but he knows this country, and perhaps he has some ideas or personal connections which could be helpful to you…. If Anneliese has such a good job at the moment, perhaps she should not give it up to join you in San Francisco. If you want me to I will gladly write to the Committee so that this case is not treated in the normal routine way. Unfortunately my affidavits have always been turned down lately because I have submitted too many already. Perhaps it would be better if your son quotes me as a reference and informs the persons in question that I guarantee his reliability….” In very good to fine condition, with several intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to last name), paperclip impression to top left edge, faint toning along extreme edges, and light wrinkling and handling wear. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
