ALS signed in the text “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 4.5 x 7.75, January 3, 1840. Ex-president Adams, then a congressman, writes in the third person to the president [Martin Van Buren]. In full: “Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. Adams regret their inability to accept the obliging invitation of the President of the United States to dinner to-morrow.” Matted and framed with two engravings and biographical plaques for Adams and Van Buren to an overall size of 27.25 x 22.5.
