In full: “Rec'd. of John Adams Three Pounds … & Eight Pence in full for what he rec'd of Edward Adams for an action brought at January Court in favor of Sarah Adams.” The receipt also bears the signature of the recipient, Charles Baxter; the lower margin bears a handwritten certification signed by Adams's grandson and biographer, Charles Francis Adams: “The body of this note in the handwriting of J. A.” Light intersecting folds (vertical fold just touching “n” of “John”), a few faint stains, and small restored losses at two corners (affecting “B” of “Boston”), otherwise bright and fine.
