First in the hearts of his countrymen: Schofield writes on those “who love the memory of Washington”

Union general (1831–1906) who served as army commander in Sherman’s Atlanta campaign and who later became General in Chief of the army. ALS signed “J. M. Schofield,” one faintly lined page tipped to a larger card, 6 x 9, Headquarters, Division of the Atlantic letterhead, June 3, 1887. Pope writes to General Carrington. In full: “I am very much obliged to you for the copy you were so kind as to send me of your ‘Souvenir of Visit to the Washington Obelisk.’ I find it exceedingly interesting as I am sure all must do who love the memory of Washington.” Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold through “M”), otherwise fine, fresh, crisp condition.
