In full: “‘On the March to the Sea,’ W. T. Sherman, Maj. Genl., Cmdg. Mil. Div of the Mo.” The famous “March to the Sea” began on November 15, 1864, when some 62,000 troops under Sherman’s command departed from recently captured Atlanta. The general’s “scorched earth” policy proved devastatingly effective when, just over a month and 300 miles later, he seized control of Savannah, dealing a crippling strategic and psychological blow to the ever-weakening Confederate forces.
