Description

Brilliant American physicist (1904–1967) who directed the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and who spearheaded the Manhattan Project, leading to the development of the first atomic bomb. As a result of his outspoken political views in the wake of World War II, he was later placed under FBI surveillance and his security clearance was stripped. Vintage red ink signature, “Robert Oppenheimer, Detroit, 2/17/59,” on an off-white slip with stippled ink background affixed to a same sized card. Affixed to a 16 x 20 mat containing an original 8 x 11 charcoal portrait of Oppenheimer signed “[George] Haessler 1959.” Very subtle show-through of glue from reverse of slip, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
